The Williston Police Department fills all open police officer positions on an as-needed basis.
STEP 1: Application Paperwork
Interested individuals who meet the minimum qualifications can submit a completed Williston Police Department application along with their resume and cover letter to Assistant Human Resources Director Josilyn Bean: firstname.lastname@example.org
STEP 2: Background Packet
Qualified applicants will be required to complete an extensive background questionnaire. Background investigations will only be conducted on applicants who are given conditional offers of employment.
STEP 3: Testing – Written and Physical
Applicants are required to take an entry-level written examination. The test used is The National Police Officer Selection Test by Stanard and Associates Inc. This test takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. Applicants are required to pass with a score of 70% or greater. Stanard and Associates Inc. sells study guides and practice tests.
This test may be waived for lateral applicants; those with more than two (2) years of sworn police service and a current peace officer’s license.
Required dress for the written exam is business casual.
Applicants that pass the written exam move on to the physical abilities test. This test is designed around job related tasks. Applicants must complete the test in under 6 minutes 30 seconds. The test consists of navigating a balance beam and stairs, sprinting, climbing, crawling, running in a serpentine fashion, simulated wrestling with a push/pull/ twist machine, and other job-related functions.
Required dress for the physical abilities test is proper gym attire and gym/running shoes.
STEP 4: Oral Interview
Oral interviews are held at the Williston Police Department. The interview panel includes the Deputy Chief, Operations Captain, Human Resources, and sworn Williston Police Department officers.

STEP 5: Conditional Offer of Employment
The hiring board will make recommendations to the Chief of Police and City of Williston officials for selection. Upon approval, an employment offer is extended to the applicant. This offer is conditional upon the requirements in Step 6 and Step 7.
STEP 6: Background Investigation
Conditional hires will be thoroughly investigated. The background investigation will include visiting with family and friends, verifying education, contacting current and previous work supervisors and coworkers, reviewing criminal history, credit history, social media, and more. Applicants will be required to fully cooperate with the background investigator. Applicants will be required to submit fingerprints for a national fingerprint search.
STEP 7: Conditional Screening
Applicants given a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete several licensing required examinations and tests. Applicants must pass a psychological examination, a medical examination, and a drug screen. Applicants will also be required to pass the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board’s Use of Force exam and qualify with a pistol. The applicant must be able to be granted a limited peace officer license by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board.
STEP 8: Begin Employment
All new officers will attend a two (2) week pre-service training. New officers who are not already licensed or licensable as a peace officer will be required to attend the next available academy class. The academy is in Bismarck, North Dakota and lasts twelve (12) weeks. All new officers will also be required to successfully complete sixteen (16) weeks of field training. A shortened twelve (12) week field training program may be approved for lateral hires.
